on the cost

a prayer about the cost of following Jesus

What if the very life you’re fighting to protect… is the one thing keeping you from truly living?

Jesus said to his disciples: “If anyone would come after me, let them deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.”

This is the cost of discipleship. Not just church attendance. Not just agreeing with truth. But dying—daily—to self.

To follow Jesus isn’t convenient. But it is transformational.

He leads us not to comfort—but to the cross. Not to control—but to surrender. Not to ease—but to obedience. Not to popularity—but to purpose.

Tonight is not just a moment for inspiration— it’s a call to decision.

Ask the Holy Spirit to search you. If He shows you something to lay down— Offer it. Let it go.

Let your prayer tonight be: “Jesus, give me the courage to deny myself and follow You fully.”

Let’s pray.

Jesus,

You never watered down the truth. You said the road is narrow. You warned us we’d be rejected, misunderstood, even hated. But You also promised life—real life—on the other side of surrender.

So we come, counting the cost.

You said, “No one who puts their hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom.” But we confess… we’ve looked back. We’ve longed for what You called us to leave behind. We’ve flirted with the world and still asked for Your peace.

We wanted resurrection—without crucifixion. Glory—without obedience. Favor—without faithfulness.

We wanted You—on our terms. We followed when it was easy… but paused when it cost us comfort.

We’ve held onto pride, to plans, to possessions— and called it “balance” instead of idolatry.

Forgive us, Lord.

You said, “Whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.” But we’ve tried to carry everything but the cross. We’ve carried image, insecurity, identities that aren’t rooted in You. We’ve worn bitterness like armor and ambition like chains.

But You— You carried our cross. You bore our sin, our shame, our punishment. You denied Yourself to bring us home.

So who are we to withhold anything from You?

Strip away every false version of us. Let everything not built on Christ fall away. Tear down the idols we’ve disguised as dreams. Break the chains we’ve begun to call “normal.”

Make us holy again— not just externally clean, but pure in heart.

You promised to give us a new heart— a heart of flesh, soft, surrendered, obedient even when it’s costly, faithful when it’s lonely, loving when it hurts.

We don’t want shallow Christianity. We don’t want borrowed faith. We don’t want secondhand surrender.

We want You. To follow You—not just admire You. To become like You—not just believe in You.

So Jesus, give us the courage to deny ourselves and follow You fully. Help us die to every false hope and come alive to Your Spirit.

Your Word says, “If anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation; the old has passed away, the new has come.” So let tonight be the death of the old— and the rising of the new.

We choose the narrow road. We choose the cross. We choose You.

You’re not one of many loves. You are Lord. You are worth it all. You are everything.

We say with Peter, “Where else would we go, Lord? You have the words of eternal life.”

Let this be the night we truly lay our lives down— and pick up the life You’ve prepared for us.

⸻

No tibia. No dividida. Sino encendida por Tu Espíritu.

Renueva nuestro primer amor.
