on presence
a prayer about immanuel - God with us
Father,
Tonight we thank you Because you are Immanuel - God with us.
Even when we were faithless and rejected you— You chose to come close.
You stepped down into our world. You entered our history. You took on flesh. You experienced hunger, exhaustion, rejection, friendship, grief.
You know what it is to be misunderstood. You know what it is to suffer. You know what it is to face death.
You are not detached from our lives. You have lived in the middle of them.
And even now, You have not withdrawn.
By Your Spirit, You dwell within Your people. Not as a symbol or a metaphor. No, you are truly present.
When we wake up, You are there. When we make decisions, You are there. When we sin and feel ashamed, You are there — not to crush us, but to convict and restore. When we suffer loss, You are there — not with shallow comfort, but with Yourself.
Forgive us for living as though You are distant. Forgive us for trying to manage our lives independently. Forgive us for believing the lie that we are alone.
Lord I pray for those in this room right now and those in the world Who may be living their lives with no awareness that you are with them.
Would You make Your nearness real to them Lord?
For the one who feels abandoned — remind them You have not left. For the one walking through transition — steady them with Your presence. For the ones grieving — sit with them in it. For the one striving to prove themselves — teach them to rest in the fact that You are already here.
You are not seasonal. You are not present only in worship services or quiet times. You are with us in ordinary work, in long conversations, in silence, in conflict, in waiting.
And because You are with us, everything changes.
We do not have to fear the future. We do not have to cling to control. We do not have to build our identity on what can be taken away.
Your presence is our security.
Even when we were still sinners,
you defeated death
so that nothing could separate us from you.
That is why I stand here convinced Lord….
That Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow— not even the powers of hell can separate us from you …
No power in the sky above or in the earth below— indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord
Your Spirit in us assures us that we belong to You now.
We still see in part. We still understand imperfectly. Your word says we look through a dim reflection.
Reveal more of yourself to us tonight Jesus.
Teach us to live aware of You. Teach us to obey You. Teach us to trust You in every season.
Even in the valley — teach us to trust you are with us.
And one day, what we know by faith will be seen fully. Hundreds of times you have told us in your word—
I will live in them and walk among them. I will make my home among them. I will be their God and they will be my people.
For now we know in part, but then we will know you fully just as you have known us fully since you created us.
We will see you face to face.
You will wipe every tear from our eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things will be gone forever.
Until that day, anchor us in this truth:
The God who created everything that has ever been made, The God holds heaven and earth together by his word That same God has drawn near to us.
And You remain near. And You will never leave.
Because You are Immanuel. God with us.
Amen.
